Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi/lo begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same notion in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems difficult at the outset, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi low provides an overwhelming array of betting choices and because you have numerous players battling for the high, as well as a few battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
