Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players often get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of play with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi-low provides an overwhelming range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, as well as a few trying for the low hand.
