Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem difficult initially, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi low provides an exciting range of betting options and because you have several individuals trying for the high hand, as well as a few shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
