Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in nearly every poker game.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
While it seems difficult at the start, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha High-Low provides an overwhelming assortment of betting choices and because you have many players trying for the high, along with a few trying for the low hand.
