Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated at the start, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease.
