• Omaha Hi Lo: General Overview

    [ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players can get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complex initially, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several individuals trying for the high hand, along with several trying for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
