Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems difficult at the outset, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, and a few trying for the low.
