Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same concept in nearly every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an exciting range of wagering choices and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, as well as many trying for the low.
