Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants can get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in just about every poker game.
The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complex at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play easily enough. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an amazing collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several players trying for the high hand, along with many trying for the low hand.
