Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players can get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease.
