Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players can get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic nuances of play easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting collection of wagering options and because you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi/lo.
