Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at first, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi lo offers an amazing collection of betting possibilities and because you have several individuals shooting for the high, along with several shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
