Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical approach in nearly all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

While it seems complicated initially, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting array of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high, and several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
