Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some players often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical concept in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complicated initially, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of the game simply enough.
