Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi lo starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
