Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/low starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated at first, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of the game simply enough.
