• Omaha Hi Low: General Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha hi-low starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.

While it seems difficult at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi low offers an amazing collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous players shooting for the high, and a few battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
