Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complicated initially, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an amazing array of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high, along with a few battling for the low hand.
