Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi lo begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players can get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated at the outset, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an exciting array of wagering options and because you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, along with a few battling for the low.
