Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease.
